Prominent Ear
Prominent ear, as known as bat ears, is a widely seen problem. It is not a medical disorder as it does not affect anything related to function of the body, but it has a negative effect on the appearance that people want to have.
Thanks to the latest advances, prominent ear surgery, as known as Otoplasty, has become a very easy and successful procedure.
What is prominent ear?
Bat ears problem is the most common deformity in the ear, which is usually caused by lack of the cartilage in the ear area. In this case the ear has a more elasticy form and it tends to be upturned or widely folded. Generally, it is seen in both ears, but some people may have only one prominent ear. Although people with long hair are able to hide it, those who keep their hair short can only deal with it with an intervention.
What is the cause of prominent ear?
Prominent ear is a genetic related problem. For this reason, the probability of this problem is quite high in the family, especially those who have a prominent ear problem in their parents. The main anatomical reasons for prominent ear can be listed as follows:
- Wide angle between the outer ear and scalp bone
- Elastic form of ear cartilage
- Lack of folds and straight form of outer ear
How is otoplasty surgery performed?
In the past, bat ears used to be a big problem as there was no easy solution for it, but now in the day it has become rather easy procedure to fix it. It is a simple procedure to perform without any possibility of serious complications, yet it needs to be performed by an expert surgeon. It is performed either under general or local anesthesia depending on the patient’s condition and surgeon’s experience. It takes approximately 45-90 minutes. Depending on the condition of the ear, it can be performed in the frontal side or back side of the ear. After the procedure, patient will have special bandages on his/her ears for 1 or 2 weeks. Most of the time the incisions are made in the posterior side of the ear, which means the patient is not left with any visible scars.
How is the healing process after an otoplasty?
For those who would not like it to interrupt their daily life, Otoplasty surgery will not be a problem. It is a procedure that is performed in a short period of time and if the patient does not get anesthesia, he/she can be discharged directly on the day. The incisions made during the operation generally do not require any stitches and they heal in 1 to 2 weeks. Patient can take a shower 1 or 2 days after the procedure.
Otoplasty surgery for children
If the family or doctor notices that the baby has prominent ear problem, it can be very useful to use elastic bands which can fix the problem without a need of surgery. If this first developmental period is missed, it may be necessary for a child to have the procedure to fix it. Otoplasty surgery can be performed in a child above the age of 6.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Where do I start? I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect experience. From the beginning until the end, Travelmedi looked after myself, my husband and even our little girl. They made us feel so comfortable and respected.

I came to travel medi on a recommendation for a breast uplift and augmentation but being only 22 I was extremely nervous and it was my first surgery also. Berat was just amazing I cannot talk higher of him! He made the whole experience every single step as seamless as possible, I was given a whole itinerary and Berat still kept me updated and went through every step I did by my side. Every consultation appointment every time I had to leave the hotel he was there with us, he is so so lovely kind caring and any question or query(not that I had many) he answered almost immediately!
I went to a different surgeon than what I was supposed to but it was the best decision ever made. Professor Mustafa Keskin is top of the game and he was absolutely brilliant and went into so much detail about every single aspect of the surgery.
I was extremely nervous about having surgery but he was amazing. Berat was with me every step of the way till I was being wheeled down for surgery! When I woke up in the morning he was there for my release and accompanied me in the car back to the hotel.
Travel Medi is an amazing company to go with, from start to finish my whole process was completely seamless and stress free. They sort everything out so all you have to do is turn up! Every time we left the hotel for a consultation or blood work our driver was there to take us wait and pick us up. Berat is a credit to Travel Medi he’s an absolute diamond! From the very first contact made with travelmedi the service was amazing. They were so thorough with all their questions and as a mother allowing her child at 17 years old to under go any surgery never mind surgery in another country I say I had nothing to worry about. They made great contact right up to appointment. From the first greeting at airport until the last drop bk at airport to return was excellent service. And that wasn't the end they still made contact to see how her healing process was and I honestly would recommend them to anyone. The service in turkey was for a breast reduction and from her first appointment until her last the staff were so helpful pleasant and very caring.

Honestly couldn't recommend anyone more. From start to finish I have been kept informed and reassured with everything. Any questions I had Berat answered quickly and made me feel very comfortable going forward with the surgery. I had the surgery less that a week ago and I am already massively happy with the results I have and can't wait till I am fully healed for the finished look!
