Cataract
Cataract is one of the most common eye disorders. In a healthy eye, the inner lens is completely transparent so the light can go through without any distortion. Cataract is what makes the vision foggy and blurry by changing the anatomy of this inner lens. This causes a loss of vision by blocking lightwaves to go through your eyes. This process is a long term gradual process that continues through time. It is widely seen in elderly people but it can also be seen in these cases;
- New born babies as hereditary,
- Diabetes patients due to high blood sugar level,
- Long term cortisone usage,
- Physical traumas to eyes
What are the symptoms of having cataract?
- Gradually losing vision
- Fading in seeing colors
- Difficulty in nightvision
- Difficulty in reading
- Frecuent change of eye prescription
- Diplopia (double seeing)
- Nuclear cataract. In this case patient is nearsighted, but through time cataract advances and he/she loses vision more and more.

How can cataract be treated?
The only way to treat it is to perform a surgery. Latest developments allow us to have the surgery needle-free and general anesthesia free in one day without the need of staying in the hospital.
The most preferred cataract surgery method is called PHACO(Phacoemulsification) in which the eye’s internal lens is emulsified with an ultrasonic device and aspirated out from the eye. Artificial and soft tissued lens is placed inside the eye. As the incision is very small, there is no sutures. For the last few years thanks to the technological advances, femtosecond laser is also used as a supportive side-method. It allows us to make the small incision without blade, using only laser. Most importantly, it helps us emulsify the inner lens, which means less risk of edema in cornea after the procedure. This method is also called laser cataract surgery.
The artificial lens is as important as the method that will be used in the surgery. It is decided in the pre-operation consultation with the doctor considering the patient’s complaints. There are 3 types of artificial lenses as Monofocal, Multifocal and Trifocal. Depending on the type of lens, the patient is likely to dispose of using glasses.
It is important to wait 4 or 5 days between the interventions of each surgery to avoid any risk of infection.
Instructions for pre and post cataract operation
- Depending on your level of cataract, you may be required to stop taking any asprin or blood thinners 3 days prior to the surgery.
- You can have breakfast on the day of the surgery, having a light one is recommended.
- If you have any systemic disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma etc. you should continue to take the necessary dosage of your medications and follow your regimen as normal. It is recommended to bring your medications to the surgery place in order not to forget taking them, as it is important to maintain the body at its normal level during the surgery.
- On the surgery day please wash your face properly, and do not apply any make-up, lotion, cream etc.
- You can go back to your home after the surgery. You will be called in for a post-op consultation in 36 hours. It is not recommended to drive right after the surgery.
- If you are prescribed two different eye drops, please use them separately and wait at least 15 minutes between each one.
- Please apply your eye drops by looking up and stretching your lower eyelid down.
- You can apply your eye drops in daytime, no need to wake up from your sleep at night.
If you haven’t received additional information, you should use your eye drops for 15 days

If I could give more than 5 stars I would! My experience with Berat at TravelMEDI was exceptional from start to finish, nothing was too much trouble any questions I may have had were answered promptly and efficiently. The treatment I received was fantastic from my surgeon to the hospital staff who were outstanding the hospital and Hotel beat anything in the UK. Where do I start? I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect experience. From the beginning until the end, Travelmedi looked after myself, my husband and even our little girl. They made us feel so comfortable and respected.

I came to travel medi on a recommendation for a breast uplift and augmentation but being only 22 I was extremely nervous and it was my first surgery also. Berat was just amazing I cannot talk higher of him! He made the whole experience every single step as seamless as possible, I was given a whole itinerary and Berat still kept me updated and went through every step I did by my side. Every consultation appointment every time I had to leave the hotel he was there with us, he is so so lovely kind caring and any question or query(not that I had many) he answered almost immediately!
I went to a different surgeon than what I was supposed to but it was the best decision ever made. Professor Mustafa Keskin is top of the game and he was absolutely brilliant and went into so much detail about every single aspect of the surgery.
I was extremely nervous about having surgery but he was amazing. Berat was with me every step of the way till I was being wheeled down for surgery! When I woke up in the morning he was there for my release and accompanied me in the car back to the hotel.
Travel Medi is an amazing company to go with, from start to finish my whole process was completely seamless and stress free. They sort everything out so all you have to do is turn up! Every time we left the hotel for a consultation or blood work our driver was there to take us wait and pick us up. Berat is a credit to Travel Medi he’s an absolute diamond! Even now I am home he is still checking in to make sure I am ok!

From the very first contact made with travelmedi the service was amazing. They were so thorough with all their questions and as a mother allowing her child at 17 years old to under go any surgery never mind surgery in another country I say I had nothing to worry about. They made great contact right up to appointment. From the first greeting at airport until the last drop bk at airport to return was excellent service. And that wasn't the end they still made contact to see how her healing process was and I honestly would recommend them to anyone. The service in turkey was for a breast reduction and from her first appointment until her last the staff were so helpful pleasant and very caring.

Honestly couldn't recommend anyone more. From start to finish I have been kept informed and reassured with everything. Any questions I had Berat answered quickly and made me feel very comfortable going forward with the surgery. I had the surgery less that a week ago and I am already massively happy with the results I have and can't wait till I am fully healed for the finished look! If anyone is unsure of travelling to Turkey or who to go with regarding surgey, TravelMedi is for sure the best!
